Non-fiction children’s book designer at Usborne Publishing

Closing Date: 14 August 2024

Salary: £29,061–£38,291 (depending on experience)

Do you dream of creating imaginative designs for children’s books? Usborne Publishing is searching for a non-fiction children’s book designer to join their team. This is a dynamic role that will see you engage your creative skills whilst working with talented writers and artists. Enthusiasm and innovation are key; you will have a flair for design, typography, illustration and a passion for finding new ways to fascinate young children with eye-catching books to help them read and write. 


The successful applicant will be joining a close-knit and friendly team, the department is busy and excellent communication skills are highly advantageous. They will be able to work independently, alongside colleagues and with people outside the team so the ability to adapt to changes in direction is a must. Applicants will be highly organised and able to juggle multiple projects. They must have a good working knowledge of Adobe CC InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop and will demonstrate this by submitting selected examples of previous work as part of the selection process. 


Though no prior experience in publishing is necessary, Usborne are looking for an applicant with a design background such as those with a degree in a design-led course or with comparable experience in a similar design role.

 

The role is based in the Farringdon, London office and offers a hybrid working pattern after an induction period: this will be three days in-office and two at home.

Campaigns Publishing Apprentice (Children's Books) at Quarto Publishing

Are you passionate about promoting and marketing children’s literature? Do you wish to join the mission to inspire life’s experiences?


Quarto Publishing, an international company, seeks an apprentice with a strong work ethic and an enthusiastic can-do attitude to drive public awareness and sales of children’s books, authors, illustrators, and talents. By the end of this fifteen-month-long apprenticeship, the candidate will have a portfolio of their work, contributing to their Level Four Publishing Professional qualification.


Working with this global enterprise requires assisting in managing Quarto’s social media and creating seasonal catalogues. Exceptional organisational skills are needed for planning promotional campaigns and performing general responsibilities typical of a Publishing Assistant. Applicants must also have strong interpersonal skills to liaise with multiple teams and external agencies. Key responsibilities include assisting with publicity campaigns and performing general administrative duties such as sending weekly updates to the team and handling enquiries from authors and the general public.


The candidate does not need specific qualifications other than having a good knowledge of social media and being passionate about books, especially having an interest in children’s fiction.

Journalism Intern (1843) at The Economist

Closing Date: 18 August at 11:59 p.m.

Salary: £28,000

Are you an aspiring journalist wanting to work at an established digital publication? The team over at The Economist’s 1843 magazine are looking for an intern to join them for six months, with the potential for a permanent role.


With the digital magazine specialising in features and narrative journalism, the intern will learn how a magazine is produced and assume admin responsibilities. Tasks include research and fact-checking for articles and pitching potential stories and ideas for both; The Economist and 1843 magazine. They will also be writing social media posts and the weekly newsletter and be expected to attend meetings on the department’s behalf.


The Economist is looking for a quick learner who is curious and keen to share their ideas, with a desire to learn everything there is to know about journalism such as written content to art direction, design, social media, etc. The intern will be a voracious reader with a detailed eye and strong critical thinking skills with the ability to captivate readers with stories focusing on the individuals at heart.


The role is based at their London office running on a hybrid policy of three days in-office per week. This opportunity is only open to people under-represented in the industry.
