It’s now August, which means it is the last month to make the most of the summer we have left! Therefore, we bring you a handful of events to keep up the pace with our wonderful publishing world… We have panel talks, book signings, mysteries, festivals and romances – everything to have you covered for the hottest month of the year, literally and metaphorically.


Sam Holland, L.V. Matthews & Karen Hamilton in Conversation

Thursday 1 August, 6:15–7:30 p.m. at Waterstones, Swindon


To start the month, Waterstones will host three crime masters in a brilliant conversation on their most recent publications. Sam Holland will be chairing with L.V. Matthews and Karen Hamilton, followed by a Q&A and finally, book signings!


Sam Holland is the award-winning author of the Major Crimes series, which narrates the brutal stories in the investigations between detectives and serial killers in the South of England. L.V. Matthews spent ten years working in sales in publishing houses before becoming a writer, who has published her latest novel, Silent Waters. Last but not least, Karen Hamilton worked as a flight attendant for many years before writing and publishing her fourth novel, The Contest. Miranda Dickinson: Things We Do For Love Book Signing

Saturday 3 August, 1:00 p.m. at Waterstones, Wolverhampton


Waterstones is celebrating more than ever, with not just one release but two releases by writer Miranda Dickinson, including her latest which will be published in August: Things We Do For Love. Miranda also writes psychological thrillers, such as The Secret Voices, under the name MJ White.


Things We Do For Love is a contemporary romance narrating the story of fledgling actress Lucie Hart, whose confidence has been stumped by her manipulative ex. Theo Larkin is an actor with a wavering reputation, leading him to prove his worth in a performance with Lucie. Their differences are palpable, but will they get through them to save their careers?


This event is free and requires no booking, plus Waterstones will be providing four copies of each of Miranda's novels to take! You can find more information and tickets for the event here.


Edinburgh International Book Festival

Saturday, 10 August to Sunday, 25 August, at Edinburgh Futures Institute, Edinburgh and Online.


Often dubbed the ‘world-leading’ celebration for all things literature and ideas, Edinburgh’s annual International Book Festival has many exciting events over two weeks. This all-inclusive event fosters a love for reading for people of all backgrounds. Those who cannot attend in person are graced with a ‘pay what you can’ system to participate by joining remotely on screen.


From book signings to Business of the Books, where key issues within the publishing industry are explored and discussed – there are hundreds of activities to keep yourself engaged and entertained. In past years authors such as Salen Godden, Jean Menzies and Richard Osman were present. Notably this year, Margaret Atwood will be making an appearance online. This is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate a diverse group of writing and reading enthusiasts and to get involved! You can find out more about the event schedule here.


Birmingham Book Extravaganza

Sunday 11 August, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Midlands Art Centre, Birmingham


Calling all book lovers as Birmingham announces their vibrant celebration for independent publishers and authors to showcase their work at various stalls and workshops. Those attending are in for a treat as they can discover independent publishers, fresh talent, poets and local authors. You can also explore works by comic creators, zine makers and illustrators. Additionally, those eager to connect to people within the literary landscape can talk to literary societies and publishing services. There is something for everyone! If you have a keen eye for antiques, you may trap yourself in a hunt for rare second-hand books and antiquarian book dealers.


The event also allows you to let your creativity run free with a book craft workshop, where you can repurpose old books into a tote bag or create your own bookmark! Another feature includes the display of vintage prints and paper ephemera, stationary and literary-themed stationery. This is the perfect occasion to support local talent, come across hidden gems, or simply have a charming day out for any and all book lovers.
